Garth Hudson

The Maestro

Initially hired with the caveat that he would provide the other members of The Band with music lessons, Garth’s status as impresario within the group is indisputable. Equally adept with technology and technique, he created a maelstrom of sound not heard before or since. Eschewing the traditional Hammond organ for a Lowry (as well as innumerable other instruments), Garth created an indescribable sonic aura around The Band, lending them a ineffable mystique. All one needs to hear is his “Genetic Method,” his unforgettable, improvisational intro to “Chest Fever,” to be bowled over by his lovable wizardry.

Garth Hudson
There is the view that jazz is evil because it comes from evil people, but the greatest priests on 52nd Street and on the streets of New York were the musicians. They were doing the greatest healing work. They knew how to punch through music which would cure and make people feel good.
